Living with persistent swelling or discomfort after surgery, cancer treatment, or chronic health conditions can be frustrating and even debilitating. If you or a loved one are experiencing unexplained swelling — especially in the arms, legs, or other extremities, you might be living with lymphedema.
At Mahnomen Health, we’re proud to partner with Big Stone Therapies to provide specialized, compassionate care for those managing lymphedema. Our trained professionals are here to help patients find relief, restore function, and reclaim their quality of life.
What Is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a chronic condition caused by the buildup of protein-rich fluid in the soft tissues, usually due to damage or removal of lymph nodes or vessels. It often occurs after cancer treatments, surgeries, radiation, or injury — but it can also be caused by congenital issues or chronic venous insufficiency.
Common signs include:
- Persistent swelling in one limb or side of the body
- A feeling of heaviness or tightness
- Reduced flexibility in joints
- Skin that pits when pressed
- A sensation of fullness or discomfort
Early diagnosis and treatment are critical. Without intervention, swelling can become more severe and lead to tissue hardening, mobility limitations, or even recurrent infections.
How We Treat It
Lymphedema therapy at Mahnomen Health is non-invasive, personalized, and rooted in evidence-based techniques. Treatment often includes:

- Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD): A gentle, hands-on technique to stimulate lymph flow and reduce fluid buildup.
- Compression Bandaging/Garments: Helps maintain progress and prevent swelling from returning.
- Exercise: A targeted movement plan to improve circulation and support long-term success.
- Skin Care: Essential to prevent infections and protect vulnerable areas.
