September 25 is World Lung Day—a reminder of just how important it is to protect and care for our lungs. At Mahnomen Health, in conjunction with Sanford Health, we are proud to offer a Lung Nodule Program designed to detect lung nodules early, often before they develop into something more serious.
Why Early Detection Matters

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the U.S., but when caught early, it can often be treated more successfully. That’s why screening programs like ours are so important. Through low-dose CT (LDCT) lung cancer screenings, we can identify lung nodules at their earliest stages, giving patients more options for treatment and better outcomes.
The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2025 there will be about 226,650 new cases of lung cancer in the United States. This staggering number underscores why proactive screening and early detection are so critical.
Who Qualifies for the Lung Nodule Program and Low-Dose CT Screening?
According to CMS guidelines, you may qualify if you meet the following:
- Age 50–77
- Current or former cigarette smoker
- A 20 pack-year smoking history (packs per day × number of years smoked)
- If a former smoker, you must have quit within the last 15 years
It’s important to note that screening is not recommended for individuals who:
- Never smoked cigarettes
- Are outside of the 50–77 age range
- Have recent lung infections, unexplained weight loss, unstable fatigue, hemoptysis, increased shortness of breath, or fever/chills/night sweats
Recognizing Symptoms
In addition to screening, awareness of potential warning signs is key. Symptoms that should be discussed with your Primary Provider include:
- Persistent or worsened cough
- Shortness of breath
- Unexplained weight loss
- Chest pain or heaviness
- Repeated lung infections
- Fatigue, fever, or night sweats
Taking the Next Step
If you think you may qualify for lung cancer screening, talk to your Primary Provider about whether a low-dose CT scan is right for you. For those who currently smoke and would like help quitting, resources and support are available through your provider or contact us today for assistance.
